Consider A Few Things Before Looking For A Deck Installer

Do you feel that your home is missing a Long Island deck in order to make it complete?  If so, then congratulations! You have made a great decision that will add to the enjoyment of your backyard for many years.

You are probably wondering what your next step should be.  You decided to hire a deck installer, so what now? Before you go out and hire someone on the spot, there are a few things you should consider.

1. What sort of work do you want done?

Regardless of size, you need to know exactly what it is the deck will be for. Is it going to be little more than a back porch for you to kick back on? Or, maybe you have plans for a giant deck that can accomodate many people?

2. Is there a design you have in mind?

Long Island decks come in all shapes, sizes, and – in some cases – colors. There are those that would prefer a practical design for a deck.  The deck may be plain, but it is very sturdy and capable of accomodating any number of activities. Other people prefer to have a more sophisticated design to their deck, involving wrappings, scrollwork, and other decorations. A homeowner can get a lot of enjoyment out of either design extreme. It all just depends on what you want.

3. What is your budget?

We all know that in order to get the best, we have to be willing to spend a lot for it.  That is why we have to make sacrifices sometimes. Once you have an idea of what you want you should try and get an idea of how realistic that is. You’re even better off having more than one design that you like.  This way if one proves to be unfeasible, the next may be workable.

4. Learn which areas to cut costs

Faced with the decision of cutting material costs, labor costs, or both?  Tread carefully. Don’t mistake a lower hourly rate for cost savings. While you can save money in the short term by going with inexperienced labor, this will lead to inferior craftsmanship.  A deck that is poorly built will be more expensive to maintain, thus costing more in the long run.

5. Make sure you get a quote before you hire someone

Only after you have secured a quote with a contractor should you consider hiring him. The LI deck you’ve always wanted could end up costing much more than you originally planned if nothing is written down.
